Professional Experience

Network Engineer

Fairfax County Government (Contractor), Fairfax, VA

May 2006 - Present

Projects /Accomplishments

·         Fairfax County was using DOS based Ghost with CD based images for deployment.  The project requirements included updating the CD based deployments to a 32 bit environment and automation via scripts.  I designed an automated deployment tool that utilized WinPE and chained scripts.  By customizing a WinPE2005 build to support scripting, DOS was eliminated.  Using VBScripts and WMI queries provided automation of the deployment process.  Systems were uniquely named according to the naming standard by using WMI to determine the system type and serial number, and injecting this information into the Sysprep file on the fly.

·         As part of the TAP program with Microsoft, Fairfax aggressively participated in the early adoption of Vista.  Playing a central role in Vista’s deployment strategy, I worked side by side with a Microsoft Vista Deployment Consultant.  Tools used include BDD 2007, Windows AIK, ImageX, SMS OSD, 1E’s Nomad and OSD Plus Pack.

LAN MANAGER

DeVry University, ArlingtonVA

2001-2005

Accomplishments

  • Three times per year, the University required that 500+ Windows systems be re-imaged in a short period of time.  More than 90% of all technician overtime occurred during these periods.  To reduce the excessive overtime costs, I designed and lead a project to reduce the number of man hours needed to maintain and deploy operating system images through the use of a “zero touch” automated operating system deployment strategy.  By utilizing existing resources such as SMS’s OSDFP, and software packaging (WinInstaller LE), no additional hardware or software expenses occurred.  The hours and number of staff required to roll out new PC’s each semester was reduced by 90%, resulting in a savings of approximately $80,000 per year in staff support costs.

  • Centralized management of server and client anti-virus software had never been successfully deployed do to the highly segmented and secured network typical of Universities.  After testing and documenting my solution, I was able to deploy a centrally managed anti-virus solution that protected systems on various platforms, network segments, remote sites and across firewalls.  The deployment was completed in June 2003, 2 weeks before the worst month in history for virus outbreaks. After deployment, the network never experienced a virus or worm outbreak.

  • Due to local administrative access for all staff and faculty, minimal security settings and a lack of user education, the number of support tickets for user caused problems was very high.  After acquiring management backing, I removed all users from the local administrators group and developed a standard, managed desktop environment that included hardening 700 systems with tools such as Group Policies, Mandatory Profiles, Custom Security Templates and Systems Management Server 2003. Additionally, I held Lunch and Learns and increased announcements and communications from IT which improved user education.

  • The majority of helpdesk technicians at DeVry are full time students working part time, so turn over is unusually high.  As a result, a way to train entry level technicians as quickly as possible was needed. To address this issue, I designed a custom support tool for helpdesk technicians to use, which consolidated the various tools and applications used by helpdesk regularly into single MMC. By restricting access to certain components and removing unneeded options or functions from each tool, a very simple and easy to understand interface was built.  Combined with training and proper documentation, new hires were able to quickly and safely master daily tasks.

LAN Manager/Sr. Systems Administrator

Provided leadership, team building, and training for technical supervisors and staff in the areas of UNIX, Web/Applications, Helpdesk, Network, Labs and Systems divisions.  Responsible for 700 desktops and 23 severs in a Windows 2003 Active Directory network with multiple sites.  Job responsibilities include researching new technologies, developing in-house solutions, producing IT standards and policies, maintaining licensing agreements, employee development and managing technology resources.

Server Engineer

Cybertrust, Herndon, VA

May 2005-Jan 2006

Accomplishments

  • Working with the Principle Architect, I was a contributing engineer in the planning and implementation phases of a large scale, multinational Windows migration.  After a merger of three large IT security firms, Cybertrust had 3 independent geographically dispersed windows domains.  Our objective was to build a single Active Directly Forest and Domain.  In order to accomplish our goal, I traveled to sites around the world, devoted significant hours, and devised efficient procedures.  After 5 months, all 1400 users and systems had been migrated.

Server Engineer: Windows Team

Daily responsibilities included maintaining and troubleshooting all Windows servers globally.  This included Domain Controllers, SQL server, Exchange and other infrastructure based Windows systems.
